Welcome to The Midi Collection!
Midi stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface;
it's computer interpretted music. MIDI files are just coded instructions
that tell the soundcard which instrument sound to produce at which note
for how long. Most PC soundcards use a method known as FM Synthesis
where different instrument sounds are created
through algorithms. In my opinion, FM Synthesis MIDI sounds totally artificial.
You can get much better performance and quality if your soundcard has Wavetable
capabilities. Such cards generate the music through sampled instruments
rather than complete synthesis; the result is a more natural, realistic
sound and better mixing. Simply put, wavetable will "rock" your system.
Don't waste your money on big speakers; a better PC soundcard will improve
the sound quality more.
In order to listen to these MIDI files your computer
must have a soundcard and MIDI drivers. Newer computers come equipped for multimedia
these days, so sound is a must-have feature for home systems. If you are
using a Macintosh computer, you'll probably need to acquire a MIDI
processing program. Instead of letting a soundcard process the data,
such programs read and convert the MIDI to a format that Macs can play.
I personally am not a Mac user, but I think Quicktime audio is somehow involved...
The files found on this site are a small
portion of my personal MIDI collection. Over the years, I've collected
nearly 1,000 files. The absolute best way to find MIDI files are through
web pages like mine. You'll be surprised how much you can get by doing
a search on the key word "MIDI"... The next best place
is the USENET newsgroup, alt.binaries.sounds.midi. Happy hunting
to you MIDI enthusiasts out there... and if you're not currently a collector,
I hope visiting my page will change your mind...
You can also add MIDI on your personal webpages...
Here's the simple code you can use that will instruct Netscape and Internet
Explorer to play a song on an HTML document:
Warning:
The music on the following pages my cause
you to tap your feet or get off your chair and dance. Other effects may
be the uncontrollable urge to sing along. These pages are for music lovers
only.
